How to adventure in Cape Town if you're a part of Gen Z – CapeTown ETC

As more and more members of Gen Z journey to the Mother City either to live or simply live it up in what’s arguably one of TikTok’s favourite cities, they’ll likely be met with the same challenges everyone fresh off a flight to Cape Town experiences in that spoilt way – there are simply too many adventure options.
If only there was a pocket guide to shine that sunset lamp light on the must do’s and how to do them… Well, thank the algorithm gods because that’s where this list comes in.
You’ve just flown across oceans and mountains, and you’re hungry (for adventure, but a meal couldn’t hurt either). You see a brilliant pink light in the distance – you’re simultaneously intrigued and also want to know whether the neon radiance is for sale (for professional reasons). Welcome to I Love The Dough, arguably the most aesthetic pizza parlour in Cape Town. With two locations in town you’ll be charmed with pizza and cocktails that make for the perfect lunch or dinner pairing. And, if you happen to touch down on a First Thursdays, I love the Dough lights up even brighter with groove.
If it’s quirky, we’re here for it, and if it’s chocolate, even better. Take a trip to any of the My Sugar spots where you can experience chocolate in the most unique array of colours, shapes and customisations. Your grandma might be confused by your skull-inspired chocolate gift, but we guarantee that your quirky side will nod with approval. Pro-tip: My Sugar cafe in Sea Point is iconic and you can also grab a delicious hot chocolate there.
We know you’re all about that 70s era, or maybe something a little more Y2K. Other people might think you’re preparing for another themed party, but realistically your thrifted threads have probably become your wardrobe staples. On Kloof Street, Retrostash, Dreamland Vintage and Blood Orange will have you surfing religiously through their thrift picks, adorned with colour and at prices that won’t make your budgeting app wallow in self-pity. Obs is another must-do avenue for the wizards of thrift, with gems like Grand Funk Retro Vintage and Bang Bang Vintage Market. Keep your eyes glued to Thrift Fest too for its moveable fest of all things retro.

If you haven’t been tempted to get into rollerskating after seeing those amazing rollerskating videos on social media (the ones that make it look super easy) then you need to have a serious conversation with your phone (not that it isn’t listening anyway).
Rollercade at the Waterfront’s Battery Park is the perfect spot to get moving like it’s a 1980s film, boasting beats, skates, and marshals on standby to help you glide with finesse (because it isn’t as easy as the internet says).
If you’re addicted to plants and are convinced that you’re the world’s best plant parent, it’s time for you to meet the overpowered character of all gardens – Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. At Kirstenbosch, you can romanticise your life to the fullest with a picnic at Fynkbos, explore what flora dreams are made of, visit some dinosaur structures and get better acquainted with the Earth this generation will hopefully save.
A Kloof Street’s blossoming love, Blondie is one of the newest spots in Cape Town. The best part about Blondie, beyond the warm hues and Princess Diana inspiration, are the kinds of people it attracts. Creative, alternative, bold and unashamedly oneself – Blondie is a spot where freedom flourishes.
A craft-focused space, Clay Cafe combines the art of treats like tapas with ceramic painting experiences. Whether ceramic creating is right up your alley, or if you and your go tos are up to learning something new and letting your inner artist bloom, it’s the perfect spot to venture to. Bonus: If you’re worried about making a mess of things, that’s kind of the point. However, you” be guided by a team of those in the know, so your creation can come to life, drenched in expertise.
Poised as a “next-generation shopping experience”, We are Egg is an incredible one-stop-shop at Cavendish Square where you can find a melting pot of local and international brands. Sneakers, beauty products, clothes, customisations and food are all on the cards when you decide to hop on over to We are Egg.
They say Obs has some magic to it, and at this establishment, the spell cast is getting two meals for the price of one, all day, every day. Two4One has quickly become a hot take in Obs for obvious reasons. It’s the perfect urban-esque delight to pop in for a bite with a friend who loves to treat themselves but is tight on money thanks to much of broader Cape Town’s lifestyle costs.
If you love skating and love skating with other humans even more, then joining in on Promenade Mondays is a must. Promenade Mondays happens when all kinds of skaters join forces in Cape Town, and serves as an incredible way to meet new people. As for the actual promenade, Sea Point’s walk of fame sports some of the most gorgeous views in Cape Town where the ocean meets the sky as you glide on by.
Youngblood Africa offers the kind of space where emerging artists can thrive. You’ll find a lot of contemporary art from up and coming artists at this local favourite, and easily be brushed with inspiration as you explore the different floors filled with its creations.
For one of the happiest hot chocolates, you’ll ever experience, Butter Cafe on Loop Street is definitely a warm, cheerful and delicious go-to. Serving all-day breakfast, you can pop in to enjoy a delightful hot chocolate with a breakfast of your choice at any time.
If the recent Ramen craze has got you ready to rumble with ramen, then Tjing Tjing awaits. Easily one of the most aesthetic restaurant houses in Cape Town, Tjing Tjing boasts layers of experiences including its renowned rooftop bar. Going to Tjing Tjing is like teleporting to Japan in all its modern and traditional design adorations – and the food only secures your illusion of being in the breathtaking beyond.
Signal Hill is known for being one of the most popular sunset spots in Cape Town, but it’s lesser-known sibling, The Rock arguably has competitive views with less crowds. If you’re searching for the sunset road less travelled, the Rock is the perfect spot to end off a day of exploring.
In a world where everything moves so quickly, sometimes truly enjoying nature’s flow is one of the best things we can do for our mental health. While there are dime a dozen spots in Cape Town to embrace Mother Nature, the Crystal Pools or Steenbras River Gorge in Helderberg should definitely be on your radar. It’s one of the most beautiful waterfall hikes the Cape has to offer, and it’ll definitely put the ‘zen’ back in Gen Z.

Americans just can’t get enough of Louis Vuitton.

On the heels of LVMH posting a record $71.5 billion in revenue in 2021, the legendary French house can partially thank the pandemic boom for making it the most coveted luxury brand in the United States, according to a new study.
The findings come from a study by online art gallery SINGULART, which examined search data from 2018 to 2021 to see where interest spiked for 42 designer brands. The French maison topped the chart of designer labels both in the US and in Europe, with a whopping 28 countries naming it their favorite luxury brand, in addition to it being named the most popular designer label across all states in the US.

While Louis Vuitton took the gold crown, other posh brands weren’t far behind. Dior is also extremely popular across the US, with it being a close second in 62% of states, particularly in Florida, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania. The designer house saw its biggest increase in searches in California, with an increase of more than 1.1 million over the four-year period.
Others like Hermes, Gucci, Valentino and British luxury house Burberry, which recently pledged to become climate positive by 2040, were also deemed popular by American states. Alexander McQueen, meanwhile, was among the favorite designers in 22% of states, according to the study.
Over in Europe, Iceland apparently really likes Hugo Boss, and Hermes was all the rage in Germany—those two brands topped each country, respectively—while Moncler is most sought after in Finland and Chanel is a big hit with the people of Georgia. But Louis Vuitton continued to reign across the pond, with the house coming in first in fashion hubs like France and Italy. Balenciaga, which recently topped the Lyst Index as the world’s hottest clothing company, didn’t make as much noise in general—but it is extremely popular in Ireland, where it finished as the country’s second favorite designer brand. We’ll have to see whether its recent success can vault it forward in the study’s next iteration.

WATCH

Interestingly, while European labels like Louis Vuitton and Dior were the clear hits with Americans, the love wasn’t necessarily reciprocated: Only three American brands — Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford — made the final lists, according to the findings.

Pointless Theatre returns to stage with new translation of 'Rhinocéros!' – DC Metro Theater Arts

Eugene Ionesco’s anti-fascist satire about herd mentality has a thing or two to say about today. With puppets.
Pointless Theatre is thrilled to announce their first in-person programming since the summer of 2019 — an original translation of Eugene Ionesco’s seminal play Rhinocéros.
First produced in 1959, Rhinocéros presents a small town overrun with radical ideas, clashing ideology, and not-so-subtle transformations. When Bérenger, a local drunk, finds himself surrounded by neighbors who are slowly turning into giant beasts, he’s forced to navigate a new world where the rights of citizens are changing as rapidly as the body of the mob around him.

While the original script serves as an allegory for the rise of fascism in mid-20th-century Europe, the story presents a familiar tone in public discourse and examines the ways in which a public is quickly radicalized.
Pointless adds an exclamation mark to Ionesco’s title: Rhinocéros! Company Member Frank Labovitz helms the project as director and translator. A Helen Hayes Award–winning costume designer, Labovitz brings a sculptor’s eye to the production. “Ionesco’s absurdist look at communities in conflict offers a great opportunity to visualize the kind of radical transformation we’ve seen over the past two years,” says Labovitz. “Representing these transformations with bold designs is the true challenge of this piece.”
Long known for smashing the boundaries between puppetry, music, dance, and the visual arts, Pointless will bring a fresh aesthetic approach to this absurdist touchstone. Employing large-scale puppetry to represent the transformation of people to beast, the production will confront audiences face to face with a cast of life-size creatures.
Performing for the first time in the venue below the Universalist National Memorial Church (1810 16th St NW, DC), the company welcomes audiences to their new home base. “We are pleased to be sharing a space that has been cultivated by other small companies like Spooky Action Theater,” says Matthew Reckeweg, the company’s producing artistic director. “Entering our 13th year with a fresh start, and in a new space, reflects the excitement our artists feel returning to the stage after a long hiatus.”
Rhinocéros! begins previews on March 26, opens April 1, and runs through April 24, 2022, at Universalist National Memorial Church, 1810 16th St NW, Washington, DC. A PWYC performance will take place April 7, 2022. Tickets are on sale now ($22 for students and seniors, $30 for general admission). To purchase, and for more information, visit pointlesstheatre.com.
Running Time: Approximately 80 minutes with one intermission.
COVID Safety: Proof of full vaccination is required for entry. Masks are required when not eating or drinking. Pointless Theatre’s ticket policies and COVID protocols are here.

Micro-development a highlight at upcoming property conference – Property Wheel – Property Wheel

For the first time since the Western Cape Property Development Forum (WCPDF) launched in 2008, it will be featuring micro-development on its annual conference programme, in recognition of the way in which this sector is making significant strides in addressing the affordable housing market.
As policies for inclusionary housing are developed and debated at various government levels and anticipated with some trepidation by property development at large, we believe that micro-developers are quietly solving the challenge of delivering affordable housing on a scale that government will never be able to achieve“, says Deon van Zyl, chairperson of the WCPDF.
Van Zyl, a panelist at the recent Housing Indaba, hosted by the City of Cape Town in April, voiced his concern that although the City has undertaken to release large tracts of land for affordable housing within the year, it would still take years for actual houses to materialise. With a waiting list in the hundreds of thousands, the WCPDF believes this is untenable, and it would indeed be up to the private sector to step in, but in innovative ways.
However well-intended they aim to be, the inclusionary housing policies being conceptualised by government are not the answer and will only solve a very small percentage of delivery in the affordable market. While our industry is not opposed to new thinking, we need to move much faster. We believe it is the private sector, many of whom are micro-developers already delivering housing in townships, who are not only stepping up to the challenge but who are also ticking many economic and financial boxes“.
These include job creation, densification, delivery against predictable timelines, entrepreneurial development and transformation of an industry, all while also delivering among the best yields of any property sector today.
The conference, under the theme of “From Surviving to Thriving in the Built Environment”, is being held from the 26th to 27th of May, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), and “The role of micro-development in delivering affordable housing” taking place during the second session on Day 1.
This session will be facilitated by researcher Rob McGaffin, renowned for his work in affordable housing, and a founding member of the Urban Real Estate Research Unit (based at UCT). He will be joined by John Spiropolous, a researcher known for his work on the financing of residential rental stock within the micro-development field, and Chuma Giyosa, project coordinator at the Development Action Group (DAG).
Giyose will be presenting groundbreaking work DAG has recently undertaken in collaboration with the HSRC, around ways in which municipalities could incentivise micro-developers. These speakers will be joined by Lisolethu Ntoyake, who is not only a township developer but the chairperson of the recently formed Township Developers Forum of Western Cape (TDFoWC). Ntoyake will present his own experiences with micro-development, including the challenges this sector currently faces.
The session will be rounded off with a panel discussion including Velda Derrocks, Regional Manager for TUFH (PE, Eastern & Western Cape), as well as Mark Schonrock, the Property Development Executive of Concor Developments. Concor is currently developing the 22-hectare Conradie Park mixed-income, mixed-use housing development in Cape Town, in partnership with the Western Cape Government.
With the TDFoWC having recently joined the Management Committee of the WCPDF, on which DAG already sits, we believe this session on micro-development is a formal acknowledgement of the incredibly important role this sector will play in South Africa’s future. It’s high time these developers get the recognition they deserve – also by the public sector which must come up with the right solutions to assist this sector with the compliance and legitimacy is now seeking“.
The two-day conference line-up has been carefully crafted to discuss and deliver a number of other solutions to the challenges that face the property development and construction industry today. Other sessions include topics such as:
Along with key players from private property development and construction, and influential decision makers in local and provincial government, the lineup also includes an address at the end of Day 1 by Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, followed by a Networking Function to be hosted by the City of Cape Town.
For more information on the WCPDF’s 9th Annual Conference: please visit the website.
PLEASE NOTE THAT, AS STRICT SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IN PLACE AND WE HAVE A TOTAL LIMIT OF ONLY 300 DELEGATES, A LIMITED NUMBER OF MEDIA TICKETS ARE BEING ISSUED ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED BASIS.

UCT to host Africa's first design thinking conference – University of Cape Town News

The Hasso Plattner d-school Afrika at the University of Cape Town (UCT) together with the Global Design Thinking Alliance (GDTA) will be hosting the prestigious d.confestival, the first design thinking event of its kind in Africa, and will open the doors to its new home on the university’s middle campus – an architectural marvel and first of its kind in Africa.
This year’s event will run from 12 to 14 October. As Africa’s first Global Design Thinking event, this three-day conference-meets-festival will take place at the HPI d-school Afrika at UCT. The hybrid event will be hosted live and will also be accessible to virtual participants.
Themed “Design thinking matters now”, the d.confestival will bring together international innovators, design thinkers and change makers from business, government, education and the social development sector to exchange ideas, share best practices, and map the future direction for design thinking practice to deliver value and impact in our world. Keynote speakers include German entrepreneur, philanthropist and founder of the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) Professor Hasso Plattner; Stanford d-school co-founder and executive director, George Kembel; and UCT Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng.
Connecting the global design thinking community
Richard Perez, the director of UCT’s d-school, said that the d.confestival is an incredible opportunity to connect the global design thinking community, who are curious about design thinking as a human-centred framework and mindset to solving complex problems.
“Africa is a continent brimming with creative potential and this, together with design thinking’s human-centred problem-solving approach, has the potential to birth powerful responses to the challenges we face not just on the continent but around the world.”

“We’ve seen how design-led thinking can unleash graduates’ potential to lead in diverse contexts.”
Professor Phakeng said that since the d-school was established at the university, “We’ve seen how design-led thinking can unleash graduates’ potential to lead in diverse contexts, work across disciplines and tap into their creativity to respond creatively to real-world challenges.”
People attending the unique event, which will merge the rigour of an academic conference with a festive interactive experience, will also be able to experience the brand new Hasso Plattner d-school Afrika building, situated on UCT’s middle campus.
An architectural marvel
An architectural focal point, the building has been designed in such a way as to allow people, who may not be entering the building as students, to interact with the building, pass underneath its big, curving glass roof, and feel the energy and passion of what is happening inside and around it.
Designed by KMH Architects in Cape Town, the project began in 2017 and had to meet strict sustainability requirements to fit in with the university’s sustainability goals. A major target was for the building to be granted a 6-star Green Star rating from the Green Building Council South Africa.

“We imagined a building that would become a birthplace for the teaching and learning of the mindset that leads to the bright ideas needed to secure a better future for Africa and the world.”
To be certified and become the greenest building in academia on the continent, the d-school will have to prove sustainable across nine categories, from adopting environmental management principles during construction, to encouraging the use of alternative transport and improving surrounding socio-economic conditions.
“So, it’s an awesome building,” said Perez. “But it has an awesome purpose and responsibility too. From the start, we imagined a building that would become a birthplace for the teaching and learning of the mindset that leads to the bright ideas needed to secure a better future for Africa and the world.”

ICT Tenders: Technology slump – ITWeb

Advertising activity on National Treasury’s eTender portal continues to recover following the Constitutional Court’s ruling on the 2017 Preferential Procurement Regulations.
This week’s round up of tenders, however, sees the ICT sector taking a back seat, as government focuses on the built environment, construction, civil works and the delivery of annual reports and performance plan presentations.
Nevertheless, there are still many opportunities for the ICT sector to consider as many public sector organisations are still technology focused.

This week’s big advertisers include the City of Tshwane and Eskom with seven tenders on offer each; the State IT Agency with six; City of Cape Town offering five requests; and the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature, Johannesburg Water, Mogale City and Ethekwini Metropolitan Municipality with four a piece.
The lull in interest sees software, hardware and telecoms demand declining slightly to 56, 44 and 13 respectively. The services sector is the only area to see an increase, allowing it to take top spot with 59 requests.
